Coming To Terms With Death

From the Present:

Those who regularly read this blog remember  that I got ducks when I was 11. One of these ducks went on to be as famous as a duck can be, and was written up in a major magazine after he had been saved from what he been certain death. See: Saving Quacks.  Quacks defied death, but only for a few months before it returned to claim him.

In this great dance of life, we have victories, but when it comes to life, defeat is what we all succumb to in the end as death meets even the most unwilling of us.

Maybe the most important thing we can do with our lives is come to terms with our death. I’m not there yet, though I sometimes think I am. But if I am honest, it still terrifies me that one day we are here and one day we are gone. I think this alone is what most drives people to faith in religion, that promise that this is not all that there is.

But it’s possible this is it, that soon we will have to leave the stage as younger actors take the roles we had.

I’m young enough where it’s not something I think about often, but I’m also old enough to have seen enough people exit life. I believe that our lives would become immensely brighter when we come to complete acceptance over our eventual demise, and I hope one day I come to just that sort of peace about the fact that this great party we call life one day ends.

October 1st, 1996 – Age 11

Today was terrible. Quacks died. WE took him to the vet and tried but he was put to sleep. I love you, Quacks. Bye, Quacks.

From the Present:

What will coming to terms with death feel like? I don’t know, but sometimes I think musically, and I think it might sound like The Star’s sound, “What the Snowman Learned About Love”. It’s beautiful, but with a flicker of sadness accompanied by complete acceptance that this is the way things are, this is the way things should be — the way they need to be.
