From the Past: 

October 6th, 1996 – Age 11

Today was great. We have 11 garter snakes and we went fishing at Mcdowell Damn and I caught a whopper of a trout. Thanks to God and Mary. 

From the Present: 

Though I am happily enjoying my unhitched, mid-20s marital status, it’s a question I wonder about should I ever fall down the cliff of love into a fertile, childbearing relationship, “Do I want my kids to grow up believing in a religion or a god?”

Though I have moved beyond religion I was given, I’m acutely aware of how present it was in my childhood. Everyday, prayers were on my lips, and an internal voice capable of engaging in dialogues with “the almighty” developed a vocabulary I feel like I still have today. At the time it was about talking to god, but today I still feel that prayerful voice is there, providing sublime comfort and reaching for understandings about what the rules and meanings within the crazy game of life.

Though it’s entirely something similar or the same could of emerged in my psyche, it’s also possible that it would not have.

It’s a question that doesn’t have any immediacy for me right now, but it’s certainly one that atheist and agnostic parents have wondered. Those who already have religion, as usual, already have the tough thinking of this decision thought out for them.
