Occationally, I’ll be taking a break from journal entries and posting poems or other such and suches from the present. Here is a poem set to music. If you like this, please check out my book iPoems for the Dolphins to Click Home About (available from Amazon.com)
What is Only Human
Perhaps everything else experiences
These raging emotions with the same
Fire and fierceness of a Hamlet.
Like the fabric of our feelings
Does not consider the size of our brain.
Imagine a greedy grasshopper chomping into
A crisp blade of green, green grass, ravishing it
Like the glutton he is, able to experience the
Lovely wonders of wily excesses like a Greek—
An expert in the harrowing hedonism that is his lot.
Perhaps the hummingbird experiences the world
Like a raging psychopath, a speed freak needing nectar
Like the crazy cocaine addict who compulsively builds billows of birdfeeders
In his yard, the sugar water a crack like substitute—not the real deal!
But this will do damn well enough for a quick fix!
See the alligator as wise enough not to have changed
In spite of the trends of jumping from species to species.
He saw the dinosaurs fly away into birds who became addicts.
He saw the mammoth feel the heat and still felt right at home
In his pond where some silly species in any eon will come
For a drink and become a snack in a snap.
Ants, communist bastards that they are, must be
Secretly plotting against the queen.
Queen of the bees, fascist genius that she is
Has restricted sex to just herself.
Drones, drones that they are, accept a life of hard
Labor if it means an ant sized possibility
Of a honey filled night alone with the queen.
And dolphins! Sex crazed maniacs who make
Wise whales feel ashamed of such sensuous games
Happening in their waters as they flirt under a drowned world,
Playfully copulating in the liberated seas.
And who will tell the tiger to take it easy?
Tell him that he could use a friend.
Look to the lion, man!
See that it’s okay to be social and still dangerous.
Stop scaring the monkeys, man, who only need to be
Disciplined for their chronic bad behavior.
And shame on mischievous monkeys, tormenting the tense termites
Who are serious architects and feel mocked every time
A slender blade of grass makes them look like an appetizer.
Even a blissful butterfly feels a flicker of sadness
When the world drifts towards the subdued fall rainbow.
Atop her empty branch, as the winds sigh like a shiver,
She feels the tightening air and what else but bittersweet nostalgia
Could she come to know as she senses her stain glass wings about to
Fall to the graying ground like a dead leaf, like expired worm food,
That paves the way towards the winter she’ll never know.
What else but a sad sort of regret can she feel as she feels her
World slipping away and a cold season she can never know
Comes to put the world to bed underneath a cold, white blanket.
After all, it is only human to think that it is only human.
