The Meaning of Life

February 4th – 2002 “The Meaning of Life” – Age 16

I have three pages left in this journal. And in these last three pages I am going to try to explain life as it seems to me, and what I have discovered about it.

As the great philosopher Socrates once said, “Know thyself.” I believe this has to be the starting point for life, first you have to decide who you are before anything else.

A natural talent someone has for something can be surpassed by a desire to succeed.

Talent is a gift that might help you succeed. Determinations is guaranteed success.

“You never fail until you stop trying.”

This could never be more true. Giving up is failure. It is better to die trying something than to give up.

Everything in your life is related. The better you get at playing the piano the better you will be at the guitar – take the deeper meaning of this.

“The meaning of life is to give life meaning.”

This meaning can be whatever you want it to be. For some it is to become a teacher or doctor, or for someone else it might be just being homeless and loving it.

But whatever that meaning is, let it come from within. Making a career out of doing something for money will never make you happy. Trust me. Jesus meant something when he said that material things can’t bring you happiness.

Love of money is the root of all evil. You will never be happy. True happiness is an understanding of knowing who you are, knowing who your god is, knowing what you want out of life and deciding to do it.

You can’t be concerned about opinions of others.

It is better to be yourself and have everyone hate you then to be someone you are not and have everyone like you.

Don’t worry about rumors people may say about you. If people believe them and think less of you, they are not really thinking less of you, but the person that they think you are.

Never lose site of hope, sometimes this is all we have.

Don’t let unconfessed sins or secrets burden you down. Face your demons sooner than later.

The past is gone, the future will always be in front of you, the only time you will ever live is in the present. So live in the present, it is all you will ever have.

Don’t dwell too long on mistakes of the past. Fix what you can and forgive yourself for things you can’t .

Forgive others and don’t hold grudges—grudges only punish yourself.

Above all, be happy, happiness is a choice that you make. We are the only ones who can decide our outlook on life. Let the glass be half full.

Granted, bad times will come and there will be times you will be sad, but always remember it takes some rain to appreciate the sun.

Decide to accept everyone, we are all in this together.

Finally, Billy Joel Armstrong summed up life nicely when he said, “It’s something unpredictable, but in the end it’s right, I hope you have the time of your life.”
