From the Past:

September 16, 1996 – Age 11

Today was pretty good. Mom threatened to send us to school [When I was homeschooled this was a running threat]. But at six o’clock we went fishing at McDowell Damn and I caught to fish thanks to God and Jesus and Mary. 

From the Present: 

When you wear blue glasses, the world looks blue. When you’re taught that God cares about every minute irrelevant detail of your life, everything is attributed to him. When we wear religious glasses, we see think we see God everywhere. I remember fishing as a kid, a prayer was always on my lips because every moment was spent hoping a bite would nibble. I watched my bobber and every little ripple seemed like a bite — usually it was a false alarm, a bit of wind, a change in current, or my own wild imagination. I saw and felt bites that were not nipples. Today, it seems an apt metaphor for the prayers for fish I emanated while fishing.
