From the Past:

May 30, 1996 – Age 10

Today we went to look at ostriches. We might get some. Also my friend Ryan was there. 

From the Present: 

For two years of my childhood, my family lived on four acres of land. We almost got ostriches, but in the end we didn’t.

But I do have a Guatemala friend who did. This friend now operates a successful non-ostrich-related business that employs over 40 employees. Before he got this current business up and running, he decided to have a go at ostrich raising and avocado farming. He bought an avocado farm and filled the fenced in  acres with ostriches.

“I didn’t know why the ostriches kept dying,” he says, recalling the endeavor. “If feels very bad, because you are trying to start a new business and every week your phone rings and someone says, ‘boss, another ostrich has died.'” 

When imagining it, it seems like a great combination. A hillside of lush avocado trees with ostriches fluttering in-between them, harmony, peace, a plate of avocado salad as an appetizer for an ostrich burger.

But in reality this is a bad combination for ostriches, which are apparently highly allergic to avocados and tend to die when they are around them.

Which makes me remember something I learned in algebra:
