I remember my Freshman year of college sitting down, dusting off my calculator and trying to figure out just how much each hour of class was costing me. The result blew my mind and I never missed class again (lies). I was dishing out $43 for every hour of class. And I did not attend an expensive school. I attended North Dakota State University, which still accepts payments in the form of cows.
Waiting tables, I was making on a good day about $20 an hour. That means for a 21 credit semester, I would need to work over 45 hours a week, just to pay for my classes, then there were other necessary things to pay for like like rent, gas, beer, food, sombreros, and crazy straws.
The 168 hours in a week just didn’t stretch very far.
21 hours of class + 30 hours of work + 5 hours of private magic time + 40 hours to party + 12.3 hours of studying + 45 hours to sleep = I wish I knew where my calculator was.
My first year of college was also the year that I decided to donate my savings to an online poker site. Which in hindsight, was a bad idea because I wasn’t learning anything. And it took a very long time to donate it all because sometimes the site would donate me money, that I would then have find a way to go all-in on pocket sevens to be beaten on the river and donate it all back.
When I think about all the time I spent in front of my computer donating, I wish I had learned or in some way benefitted from the experience.
If I knew then, what I know now, I would have gambled on a foreign language poker site. I’ve always been interested in other languages (mostly to be able to hit on girls who don’t speak my language). Instead of spending all that time gambling on an English speaking site, I should have been gambling on a PartyPoker.fr. PartyPoker.fr, is like normal PartyPoker, but it’s all in French.
It’s like having a French tutor while you gamble. You can chat with other players in French, learn new words from the content–it’s all-in immersion. Even if you lose your money, have you really lost if in the process you learned how to say, “Après la pluie, le beau temps?”
If I had spent those hundred of hours on PartyPoker.fr, today I could hold my head up and say, $5,000? Yeah? Totally worth it, and way cheaper than paying for a French minor in college. And now I know how to say, “Ce n’est pas la vache qui crie le plus fort qui donne le plus de lait.” Which means, ” It is not the cow who shouts the loudest who gives the most milk.” Which means. . . I have no idea. But seriously, this is French proverb.
So, for those non-traditional students who think learning best occurs outside a classroom, instead of putting those hard earned dollars into something that will get you a degree, why not learn your foreign language on an online poker site? If lose, you still win. And if you win, you win double. As some French ancestor of mine (I have no idea if I have French ancestors) Heureux au jeu, malheureux en amour!
You got that right Jon Pierre!
