In light of some tension across Guatemala recently, here’s a poem from my book based on a beautiful aspect of the culture.

Fortunately, Kites do not listen to Logic

In Guatemala the Day of the Dead is the day families gather in cemeteries and kites are released to the sky. Surrounded by tombs, people fight through the crowds where above the fallen, colorful kites fight for heaven. They are huge. Sometimes six men are needed to hold them back as they pull violently against the rope that keeps them earth bound.

Blue, yellow, orange, pink, red, purple, green—tissue tails ripping through the wind: All fighting for the sky, subdued, pulling, restrained, straining, jerking, choked back, flying, soaring.

To fighting kites, there is no one to tell you, “The sky will never be yours, will never be anyone’s, will never be had.” There is no one to tell you that the line holding you back, anchoring you to the ground holding our ancestors, that if we were to cut the chord, you would not fly higher, but would drift peacefully to the ground, forever far from the heaven you fought for.
