This journal the first time I remember doing this: writing a letter to myself in the future. Recently a roommate of mine a sealed letter on my bed that said, “Luke Tomorrow” written on it.
“Whose is that?” she asked me.
“For me,” I said.
“Who wrote it?”
“I did.”
“That’s a bit strange, isn’t it (she’s British, so imagine saying this with the appropriate accent).
Maybe it is. But when we plan for the future, when we set out on a path that will bring us to a person or place we are set on, we never know if we’ll follow through. Ultimately it is not up to us. It is up to someone very alike us, someone who used to be us: Our future self. So sometimes I write letters to that person hoping that he’ll remember me when he makes decisions. I hope he’ll remember my dreams and goals and ideals and that he’ll never compromise and be someone else. I hope he’ll be better than me, wiser than me, and about all happy with who he is and the life that he is leading.
The pleading tone of this journal entry makes sense if you read the previous entry.
