Oh…I’m Going to Miss you Spam Comments

Today is a big day. Today this website celebrates it’s one month birthday (approximately).

But more than that, today is the day I installed a widget to block the many millions (dozens) of spam comments I was receiving daily.

Back in the day (only a month ago) I used to be thrilled to be getting spam comments. That meant that robots all over Russia loved my site. They said stuff like, “Guidance is the thing that many of us look for when we know the answer but hope many of us decided not to. (Erica Jong)” To which I would pause and wonder, “What the hell are they talking about?”

It’s true, their comments were out of context, and some days I was getting more spam comments than actually visitors to this site (How do you do it spambots? How do you leave comments on sites you have never visited [spambots are like Internet ninjas])

And some spam comments made my day. Like the one pictured about that says: “We are a group of volunteers and opening a new scheme in our community. Your site offered us with helpful info to paintings on. You have performed an impressive task and our entire neighborhood can be grateful to you.”

You hear that people who thought I would never amount to anything? An ENTIRE neighborhood can be grateful to me for the impressive task I preformed!

I suspect that this comment was left by a very young, very naive (anyone know how to make the double dot thing about the ‘i’) spambot. He clearly did not do his homework. He had the right idea–flattery. And perhaps it could have worked on some other posts, but considering the post’s title was “That was not a funny thing to do dad. Urinating on people’s pets is not funny”, I don’t think there was much for the neighborhood to be grateful for, nor the task that I allegedly preformed so impressive.

Spambots are huge players. They whisper sweet somethings in your comment section. They say  things like, “I really love your site.” But they don’t know you. They don’t know your site. They just want to get into your site’s pants so that some other site, that they really love, can get a better Google ranking.

But with my new widget installed, I am now immune to those smooth talking spambots.

So today, I bid you farewell spambots. I hope that as you travel across the vast Internet you find what you are looking for, whatever that may be. I hope you leave comments on inspiring sites, but I also hope you remember to have fun and visit fun sites too (like hamsterdance.com). If you visit pornographic sites, that is your choice, but don’t lose touch with reality. Be kind to yourself and don’t forget to leave spam on educational sites and news sites. Whatever you do, don’t forget who you are, you are a spambot, and even if the whole world wide web hates you for that (we do) , don’t forget to love yourself, because if you don’t, no one else will.
